THE ECHO MAKER

THE ECHO MAKER
Richard Powers
Farrar Straus and Giroux

A young man survives an auto accident with a brain lesion that renders him unable to recognize the people closest to him. The impact of this devastating head injury on his fragile sister and a psychologist (who may remind readers of Oliver Sacks) unfolds during the course of the book. Powers, our best novelist of ideas, explores the frontiers of neuropsychology, the mutability of self, and, finally, the interconnectedness of all living things in this tour de force. The Echo Maker gets my vote for the most thought provoking novel published this year.
