DOGEN’S EXTENSIVE RECORD
Taigen Dan Leighton & Shohaku Okumura
NBN/Wisdom
This 722 page book is the most important translation of a primary Zen text published in the last few years. It consists of short sermons by Eihei Dogen, the great 13th century Zen Master, as recorded by his students. Dogen continually flips our preconceptions—often with a poet’s playful sensibility (he speaks at one point of “the music of snow”)—and helps us to glimpse ourselves and the world with great clarity. Dogen’s Extensive Record includes graceful introductory essays and lucid notes that help break open the texts. Dogen is a notoriously difficult religious thinker, but this book is worth your careful attention and effort.
